Understanding Body Fat Percentage

When going on a diet, it is important to note the difference between weight loss and fat loss. While the two are used interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing.

Understanding body fat percentage will better assist in developing a well rounded weight loss program.

Weight loss is the loss of body mass by means of fluids, fat, and or muscle tissue.

The simple fact that weight is being lost does not translate to fat loss taking place.

Fat loss is weight loss with the over-all goal of shrinking and reducing fat cells.

So the question remains: how is body fat percentage determined. The easiest way to determine body fat percentage is by calculating the individuals BMI or body mass index.

Keep in mind that the BMI is only a rough estimate of body fat percentage in the body. Many outside factors can and do affect the accuracy of BMI testing.

BMI should not be used to on teenagers and individuals with large amounts of muscle mass.

The most accurate way to measure body fat is through Hydrostatic Weighing. In simple terms it is the process of being weighed under water.

Understanding body fat percentage can help create a well developed weight loss plan.

Body fat percentage for men should fall between 15%-18%

Body fat percentage for women should fall between 22%-25%
