Looking for a change in your life? If you're bored with your sedentary lifestyle, I recommend that you get into running. Whether it be professionally or simply as a hobby, running is a great way to help you look and feel great.
In theory, running is quite simple. All you have to do is keep one foot in front of the other right? In layman's terms that is correct. To become a better runner however, there is a bit more to it. Below are some tips to help you get started in the world of running.
Setting realistic goals:
Setting goals is key in all aspects of life including sports. It's important to set realistic expectations as this will help keep you motivated and decrease chance of injury. Have a doctor check your state of health before starting a running program.
Once the health check is cleared, start by setting a weekly goal. Be fair when setting goals. If you're not particularly active, it's not wise to set high mileage goals.
Figure out your running style:
There are many different forms of running styles. While no one form is the right way of doing things, knowing your running style will help reduce risk of injury. Head to your local running store for more help on this topic.
You essentially need to know what your arch is and whether you under or over pronate. Doing so will help you in purchasing the right kind of shoe. Having the right shoe will help avoid common injuries such as shin splints, joint and it band pain.
Rest and replenish:
A common mistake for most aspiring runners, is taking on more than they can handle. If you consider yourself fairly active, make sure that you account for your increase in exercise by increasing your caloric intake. If you fail to do so, you'll be tired throughout the day. Regardless of your activity level, it's very important that you rest to allow your body to recover. Poor diet and and lack of rest account for a large number of running related injuries.
Understand your heart rate:
Before you undertake any exercise program, it's important to understand your heart rate. Doing so will help you make the most out of workouts. If you don't track your heart rate, you may undertrain or over train. Since time is limited, it's crucial that you optimize all of your workouts.
As you can see, there is much more to running than meets the eye. We will be covering other running essentials in the weeks to come. A word of advice, don't let information overwhelm you. Take it in one step at a time and before you know it, it will become second nature
