Changes in the diet can be but are not limited to: switching to whole grain, eating organic, cut back on beef and pork, and purchasing the low calorie/low fat alternative of your favorite meals/snacks. Avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oils, and high fructose corn syrup.

Eat smaller portions and eat more often: Once your diet has been tweaked and all the "bad" stuff has been removed, you will want to cut down on portion sizes. One of the best ways to boost metabolism is through eating 5-6 small portions through out the day. Gone are the days of breakfast lunch and dinner. By eating smaller portions you are also less likely to over eat.
